New piece debut at JCI Carnival

This coming Sunday, June 26, 2011 some friends and I will be debuting a festival-inspired piece. It’s a 12-minute bonanza of every slant-drum idea we’ve had over the last two years. It’s been one of the most exciting things I’ve worked on this year and I’m really looking forward to the performance. It’ll be our first time performing it so it’ll be rough around the edges but there are no less than a dozen new movements and concepts on debut. See Double Rainbow, Spark, Swoon, Offset Murder, She Wrote, Fricassee, Fricashime, Donzoko Scramble, Bullet Points, straight-ji nidan, and backup singers with a stepping groove — performed for the first time! I’m really lucky to be joined by some of the most enthusiastic bon-taiko players in Los Angeles: Jen Baik, David Wells, Masato Baba, Candice Shikai, Janet Hwu, Liz Ishida, Darren Endo, and Yuri Yoshida. This is going to be fun!!!

Sounds like it will be an amazing performance! Wish I could make it! Hopefully there will be some videos taken. You all are going to do an awesome job!

Thanks, Dan! Actually you played a key part in pulling this crazy piece together.

That video of you and Maryll playing Murder Extended (now called “She Wrote) was the key to finishing the ending of the piece. You sent me that video right as I was struggling to find something that could serve as the peak of the song. “That’s it!” We’re now playing Murder offset into She Wrote and I think it works as an exciting conclusion to wrap everything together. Thanks for the inspiration, Dan!

This sounds awesome! Good luck with the show!

Will there be a video of the arrangement?

  5. Dan says:

    Hey Kris!

Saw the video up on your vimeo page. Loved the ending!! The offset Murder section sounded brilliant! I’m so happy that your project turned out so successful! You guys did a really great job and I’m super excited to see how far the bon taiko style can go.

Keep up the great work and looking forward to seeing what comes next! :)
