This coming Sunday, June 26, 2011 some friends and I will be debuting a festival-inspired piece. It’s a 12-minute bonanza of every slant-drum idea we’ve had over the last two years. It’s been one of the most exciting things I’ve worked on this year and I’m really looking forward to the performance. It’ll be our first time performing it so it’ll be rough around the edges but there are no less than a dozen new movements and concepts on debut. See Double Rainbow, Spark, Swoon, Offset Murder, She Wrote, Fricassee, Fricashime, Donzoko Scramble, Bullet Points, straight-ji nidan, and backup singers with a stepping groove — performed for the first time! I’m really lucky to be joined by some of the most enthusiastic bon-taiko players in Los Angeles: Jen Baik, David Wells, Masato Baba, Candice Shikai, Janet Hwu, Liz Ishida, Darren Endo, and Yuri Yoshida. This is going to be fun!!!

On the 10th of this month we had the pleasure of returning to Ashland to participate in a “Green Show” performance. The Green Shows are held free for the public in the beautiful outdoor plaza. It’s one of On Ensemble’s favorite places to play and this time too was a fantastic experience. Thank you to Jess and the helpful crew and the enthusiastic audience!

Thanks to the hard work of UCLA’s Kyodo Taiko and Yukai Daiko, the 2011 Intercollegiate Taiko Invitation was fantastic! The busy weekend was filled with workshops, good food (thank you to the caterers for the vegan treats!), and performances by the college groups. I taught matsuri slant drum choreography and we had a great time. I gave them three options of new moves and all three groups chose the hardest option, “Cronkite”. Perhaps we’ll see the rhythm sneak its way into next year’s performance. Thank you everyone!
