New piece: Untitled naname (slant) solo

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

I’ve cobbled together some of the things I’ve been practicing for the last few months into a rough solo piece. The composition has provided lots of inspiration thus far but I feel this practice arc coming to a close. I’m hoping some constructive criticism would give me a few more hours of motivated practice. Any suggestions of things I should try differently?

InventiOn 2011 well underway

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

InventiOn 2011, On Ensemble’s year-long focus on creativity, is going swimmingly. Settling down from the craziness of Cerritos Center in March we’ve been in town for most of April and May, with smaller school shows and workshops here and there. It’s a bit of down-time before things get busy again in the summer and toward the end of the year. Our program of Creative Rehearsals, empowered by the financial support of the FoundatiOn Team, has been a great success. Kelvin comes to town next week for more exploration. Very exciting!

Reflecting on 5000 hours of practice

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Tomorrow I will pass the half-way point toward my long-term goal of 10,000 hours of practice! This milestone is coming at a great time… April and May have been some of my best practice months ever (knock on wood). Here are a few thoughts on recent practice successes and on the 5000 hours thus far.
