End of New York stay
We had our last performance of our New York trip today. Maz, Kaoru and I performed a short set at the Saint Marks Taiko Festival. Yesterday we had a great performance at DROM with Kaoru, Yuka Yamamoto, Shanir Blumenkranz, and Barbara Merjan. Yuka and Shanir started the show off with a great couple of songs featuring Yuka’s beautiful and playful voice and instrumental touches backed by Shanir’s great bass playing. Kaoru joined them for a song then the Barbara, Maz and myself joined in and provided a fun groove for their last piece. After that we did a some On Ensemble songs and a couple of traditional pieces from Kaoru’s repertoire. It’s always fun to play with different musicians and play different arrangements of familiar songs. With this particular group of musicians we were really able to stretch out and push the songs into a much more free improvisational direction.
Overall we had a great time in New York. We got to perform at Carnegie, we met new taiko people, taught some workshops and played with some great musicians. We also got to do lots of great eating, saw some great music and got to cheer the Lakers on to victory in a bar full of Celtics fans! Maz and I have to give a huge shout out and thank you to Eric Whitacre and DCINY for bringing us out to NY to be a part of Paradise Lost : Shadows and Wings. Also a mega huge shout out and thank to Kaoru Watanabe and Mari Nakano for being such great hosts and for organizing our workshops and performances while we were out here.
