Taiko Games for Taiko Conference – Performers needed!

Four, all-new “Taiko Games” for the 2009 Taiko Conference!

PERFORMERS NEEDED!

I am very pleased to announce that I have completed the composition of four taiko games to be presented to the community at the 2009 Taiko Conference!  From a simple, two-person counting and drumming game, to an intense version of tic tac toe for Nidan-style drums, the games are really unique, and really fun!  They will be released under the Free Art License so that all taiko players can enjoy and build on them!

I need your help!  I’ve been working on these pieces for six months, but now I need people to help me perform them!  24 people, in fact.  I am looking for volunteers of all taiko levels to help me demonstrate these pieces to the Taiko Conference attendees on Friday, August 7, at 12:15pm.  Volunteers needn’t be registered for the Conference, and Conference attendees can participate as well.  If you’re in town and available, please join me!

First, a bit more about the games…

THE GAMES

Batchi Count

A simple game for 2-4 people, players face each other around a drum.  Players take turns trying to guess how many batchi will be held up.  When they guess correctly, that player gets to improvise!

Taiko no Koushin

Inspired by the “Algorithm March” from an NHK children’s program (see the original here) “Taiko no Koushin” is a stepping dance for any number of participants.  “Taiko no Koushin” is filled with fun taiko references — translated from Japanese: “One step forward, then batchi in a pose.  Another step forward, now to slant-drum mode…”

Taiko Pirates

A row of 10 or more players become energetic pirates, using one batchi to play rhythms on multiple drums.  Don’t lose your stick or knock over your neighbor, you land-lubber!

Tic Tac Don

The most advanced game, drummers play Tic Tac Toe by indicating moves rhythmically on Nidan-style drums.  To place their mark, players first hit the slant drum once or twice to indicate a side or corner position, then hit the odaiko one, two, three, or four times to indicate the particular spot.  Rhythm, movement, and game strategy… all at a fast pace!
